One of Illi's starting points was initially struggling with his German identity, which was true for many of his generation. "Escapes" abroad were the consequence, also an intensive confrontation with the abysses of German history, with German guilt and shame.

Based on the findings of physics that everything is rhythm and vibration, Illi began to set his art in motion at the beginning of the 1990s. Air became his central sculptural material. Since then, he has created kinetic-acoustic works on the theme of "breath", his installations allowing the space to breathe. In addition to sound aspects, the connected system and the similarity of the breath suggest social thoughts, but also make one's own breathing conscious. With the thought of the first and last breath, the existential is present.

Illi has been working with Bettina Bürkle on the "Plant Breath" project since 1999. The oversized organic forms sewn from balloon fabric move in slow rhythms and cycles. The poetry of the kinetic sculpture field emerges from the calm flow of colours and forms. Form and space complement each other symbiotically. Outside and inside, shell and airflow form an organic continuum of breathing and taking breath.

In addition, "catharsis machines" are created, most of which are useful in a sweeping way. It is up to the viewer whether he recognizes an emancipatory and revealing or a repressing and concealing activity. In his "Agnosie" works, canes for the blind scan the room. Illi deals with the voluntary blindness of the sighted, the processes of blindness. With his catharsis machines and agnostic works, he pursues an archaeological search for clues and mostly ironically uncovers pathological mechanisms.

In addition, he creates machines that can be located around a discourse on time and work, such as drawing machines, dysfunctional clocks ("Ultima Latet"), hamster wheels, or a Sisyphos machine.
